How did the case end?

This tool provides general information about Nevada law — it is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Every case is different. Full disclaimer

Why sealing is worth the effort

Sealing a record under NRS 179.245 removes it from public view. For many people the practical payoff is a job offer that no longer falls through, an apartment application that gets approved, or a professional license that finally clears. The record is not destroyed — law enforcement and certain agencies can still access it — but for everyday life it effectively disappears.

Sealing is a court process, not an automatic right, and the parts where do-it-yourself petitions most often stall — records-gathering, filing in the right court, and the DA negotiation — are exactly the parts an attorney handles.

How to Seal a Criminal Record in Nevada — waiting periods, process, and costs

Record sealing questions, answered

Does sealing destroy my record?

No. Sealing removes the record from public view — employers, landlords, and most licensing boards running a standard background check will not see it. The record is not destroyed: law enforcement and certain agencies can still access it.

When does the waiting clock start?

The clock starts when the case fully closes — for a conviction, that means after you finish custody, probation, or parole, not the arrest date. Because the start date depends on your exact release or discharge date, confirm it before filing.

What can never be sealed in Nevada?

Sexual offenses, crimes against children, and felony DUI involving death or substantial bodily harm can never be sealed, plus a handful of other serious offenses. If your offense is on that list, other relief — such as a pardon — may still be worth exploring.

Do dismissed charges have a waiting period?

No. Dismissed charges and acquittals have no waiting period under NRS 179.255 — you can petition to seal them right away.

How long does the petition take?

Once you are eligible, the petition process typically takes a few months depending on the court and how fast records come back. Filing before you are eligible backfires — a petition filed too soon gets denied.
